The annual Freedom’s Run races will be held on Saturday, October 13 this year – you can check the race countdown clock on the website http://www.freedomsrun.org/. There are five runs, for all fitness levels and ages including a kids fun run, with the marathon taking you through the four National Parks that are so close to Shepherdstown: Harpers Ferry, Antietam Battlefield, the C&O Canal and the Potomac Heritage Trail. The marathon is a wonderful addition to the busy fall schedule in our area, but even more wonderful are the contributions of Two Rivers Treads and Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, a local physician who has become a strong voice for the natural running movement.
Last weekend Dr. Mark partnered with Vivobarefoot and gave away almost 200 pairs of shoes to kids who came to the store – any kid who showed up. You can see from the video what a joyous occasion it was! Mark holds free running clinics, helps out in the store to diagnose and assist would-be barefoot shoe wearers, and gained national attention after a New York Times magazine article extolled the virtues of barefoot running.
Freedom’s Run is a great event, but the work that Mark has done, establishing Two Rivers Treads and making health and fitness part of the ongoing dialogue in the town on not just race day but on every day is transformative. A big Welcome! to all the race runners and Thanks! to Dr. Mark for choosing our area to do his work.
