Ramps are Here Again!

An early start to spring has put ramps on the menu around the Eastern Panhandle! These garlicky wild leeks are the darlings of the food world now, but there was a time when they were not well known as foodstuffs except here in the Appalachian region.  There’s even a website devoted to nothing but ramps.  See their photo of a ramp patch below:

Richele Cole of Pretty in the Panhandle blog has written a more extensive post about ramps and where to find them in the area.  Here in Shepherdstown, you’ll find butter-poached ramps on grilled toast at the Press Room on the appetizer menu (as available) and as a spring special at the Bavarian Inn.

Be sure to share them with your dining partner – trust me, it’s better if both of you are exuding the aroma at the same time!
