An early start to spring has put ramps on the menu around the Eastern Panhandle! These garlicky wild leeks are the darlings of the food world now, but there was a time when they were not well known as foodstuffs except here in the Appalachian region. There’s even a website devoted to nothing but ramps. See their photo of a ramp patch below:
Richele Cole of Pretty in the Panhandle blog has written a more extensive post about ramps and where to find them in the area. Here in Shepherdstown, you’ll find butter-poached ramps on grilled toast at the Press Room on the appetizer menu (as available) and as a spring special at the Bavarian Inn.
Be sure to share them with your dining partner – trust me, it’s better if both of you are exuding the aroma at the same time!
