Since it was an incredibly balmy 50-ish degrees on New Year’s Day, we braved the smattering of raindrops to take a walk on the C&O Canal Path downriver to Pack Horse Ford. While the C&O may be better known for biking its length from Cumberland, MD to Washington, DC, local Shepherdstonians use it for walking and jogging on a regular basis.
Because the leaves are off the trees, we had picture perfect views of the Potomac River and some of the sights on the Shepherdstown side of the river, like the Tobacco Warehouse. We walked to the historic marker for Packhorse Ford (the website has the inscription in an easier-to-read format). In the fall there is an annual walk across the river from Shepherdstown to the Maryland side, with a picnic afterwards.
