WV’s Largest Sugar Maple Is in Shepherdstown

Did you know that all 50 states have Big Tree programs, and there is a National Registry of Big Trees? This year, the largest sugar maple has been found in Shepherdstown, WV, at the home of Diana Suttenfield’s mother. Biggest means oldest, as well, so this tree has witnessed a lot of history in the area, from the Beeline March to meet George Washington, to the founding of Shepherdstown and through the Civil War battles at Antietam and Harpers Ferry.
You can read more about it in an article by our local newspaper. Next year they’ll be looking for the biggest evergreen/pine tree, so get your entries ready!
