Theater, Living History and Music this Weekend in and around Shepherdstown

This weekend brings some wonderful live performances to the Shepherdstown area, and it’s going to be a lovely weekend for a short drive from the city (weatherbug)-

First, our own Contemporary American Theater Festival has a sneak preview fundraiser at the Studio Theater on Shepherd University campus Saturday evening. Tickets are $45 with h’or douevres at 7 and the performance at 8, featuring the talented Anne Marie Nest and a bevy of local performers. We had a lot of fun watching our local ‘stars’ last year and got a glimpse at the excellent lineup of five plays – this year’s schedule promises to be as entertaining as ever.

During the day on Saturday at Harpers Ferry National Park, one of the first events of a series commemorating the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s raid on the arsenal there will take place – a living history presentation of the wedding of Virginia Kennedy, wife to Captain John Cook, one of John Brown’s conspirators. Cynthia Goetz, a guest last night at the Inn and a descendant of Captain Cook, will give a dramatic presentation.

Finally on Sunday, to cap the weekend off, Chris Smither – a New Orleans-bred folk and blues man, will be playing at the Blue Moon Cafe. Doors open at 5:30, with a dinner menu available from 6 to 7 and the concert beginning at 7. As a special offer for concert-goers, book any room at the Inn on Sunday night (only) for $120 plus tax. Enjoy the concert, walk back to the Inn, and have a great breakfast Monday morning before you head out of town refreshed.

We hope to see you this weekend!
