Christmas in Shepherdstown, 2008

I know it’s really too early to discuss Christmas events – and I promise I haven’t put the tree up yet – but things really start to hop around here for the holidays and they begin on November 28, the day after Thanksgiving. You don’t want to wait to make your plans until then, right?

Every year this lovely little town puts on its Sunday best for the holidays – white lights rim the buildings on German Street, a tree is lit on McMurran lawn, and Santa puts in an appearance not once but twice during the season. His first arrival is on the Friday after Thanksgiving for the ceremonial tree lighting – often Scrooge shows up to try to throw a monkey wrench into the fun but Santa, aided by our brave mayor, always wins him over. The next weekend, on Saturday, December 6, Santa is the guest of honor in our Christmas parade, joined by the Dogs of Shepherdstown and the high school marching bands. I have just acquired special light-up reindeer antlers for wearing while watching the parade.

Our shops are open later in the evening for holiday browsing and buying, and many of them offer special treats like hot cider and cookies to keep your strength up. Carolers may be sighted and the roasted chestnut vendor often sets up shop outside the library. Check the Christmas in Shepherdstown website for event details and locations. We’d love to see you at the Inn during the holidays!
