Movies at the Shepherdstown Opera House

One of the simple pleasures of Shepherdstown, WV, is our independent movie theater, the Shepherdstown Opera House, which is a mere 1 and 1/2 blocks from our front door. It is a throwback to an older era of movie theaters, updated with a good sound system and a beer/wine license. That’s right, you can have a beer or glass of wine with your popcorn topped with real melted butter! Jim will watch any movie, even a Bollywood chick flick, with a beer and popcorn to distract him. The seats are the original hardwood ones, so look for the ones with pillows on them or bring your own to maximize your viewing pleasure.

There are generally two movies each weekend, with showings on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. – two each day, one of each movie. We try to go to the early show every Monday and we usually manage to make it at least twice a month. We have seen so many great movies over the past five years here – Bride and Prejudice, the aforementioned Bollywood chick flick, Thank You for Smoking, Letters from Iwo Jima, and most recently, The Band’s Visit. This Monday we are planning to see Smart People. Jim is indulging my love for Dennis Quaid.

There are a lot of things to do in Shepherdstown during a stay at the Inn, and making time for a movie is a nice, low-key way to spend an afternoon or evening. You’ll be glad you went!
