As part of the hospitality at the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B in
Shepherdstown, WV, we are pleased
to offer you a full breakfast in the morning along with beverages and
biscotti for early risers. Our full breakfasts consist of a fruit
course, an entree, and baked goods and are 'cook's choice', not
a buffet or 'cooked to order'. To help us prepare a breakfast
you will enjoy, please tell us when booking of ANY dietary
restrictions you may have. Many of our breakfasts are
casserole-style creations that cannot be changed before serving but
can be adapted if we know of any problems
before your arrival! Dietary restrictions include things like
no sugar, allergies to wheat, eggs or dairy, religious restrictions
on pork and shellfish, no meat for vegetarians, etc. We do our
best to prepare a delicious breakfast for all of our guests.
There are times, however, when we cannot meet all dietary
restrictions - in that case, we have cereal, granola and yogurt
available for you.
Guests
have recently enjoyed sour cream coffee cake and hot apple soup with
featherbed eggs and local sausage patties; another morning's menu
consisted of zucchini bread and fresh fruit with lime-ginger syrup
with blueberry-pecan French toast and crisp local bacon. Our breakfasts are typically served
at large tables in two dining rooms (each seats six guests) from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. but if your schedule requires special arrangements please let us know and we'll do
our best to work with you. Early beverage service (coffee, tea or
decaf) with our signature spice biscotti is available at 7:00 a.m.

The Inn is furnished comfortably with appointments appropriate for the age and
architecture of the house. Especially appealing to our guests who
are traveling in groups are the spacious common areas here, like the
large living room with several seating areas and a fireplace and the
guest library and porch which offer books and quiet relaxation. We
are happy to work with you to arrange group dinners or recommend
restaurants in the area for your dining pleasure.
The Thomas Shepherd Inn b&b was built in 1868 as the parsonage for a Lutheran church
in Shepherdstown, on
land once owned by Thomas Shepherd. Previous to the construction of the
Federal-style building that is now the Inn, the first house was built on the
property in 1774 and was owned by Aaron Jewett, a prominent town attorney.
Many of the changes to the building were made after 1936, when two young
physicians, Dr. Halvard Wanger and Dr. S. Elizabeth McFetridge, moved into the
house and raised two sons and two daughters. They added the back Duke
Street quarter of the house to provide offices and examining rooms for
their patients. A plaque on the Duke Street exterior wall commemorates
their presence. In the interior of the Inn evidence still remains of the
additions - an exterior window in the back hallway to guest room 4.

The property was purchased in 1983 from Elizabeth McFetridge's estate by Ed
and Carol Ringoot, who renovated it as a gracious bed and breakfast in
the traditional style to serve the Shepherdstown area. Hospitality for travelers has continued
since that time through to the current owners, Jeanne Muir and Jim Ford,
who look forward to opening the doors of the Inn to you.
